This post is a bit tongue-in- cheek because I’m not obsessed with all the stuff I hear about global warming, however I do think there is a need to reduce waste. We’re constantly being bombarded with the message about reducing waste here. We have a weekly rubbish collection and alternate week collection of paper and textile or plastic and cans. It works well, I understand that the local council is soon to issue Wheelie Bins and alter the service but continue a weekly waste food collection- quite how they’ll monitor this is a bit of a mystery.
The Council also subsidise various waste reduction initiatives. One is a money – back offer to those who fit a Waste Disposal Unit – impressed with these when we visited The States a few years ago. My husband was convinced that eventually the food waste would be collected fortnightly so he fitted one last year, we were reimbursed part of the cost when we sent the receipt to the council.
Today the Shredderman has called, all the garden tree and shrub prunings are shredded to use as a mulch or in compost. I appreciate this service, I don’t need to fill the car with the prunings and go to the Waste Tip , it costs about £12.00 for up to one hour of the service, it’s cheaper than hiring a shredder and it deals with thicker branches than the shredders we’ve hired in the past . I’ll probably put some of the shreddings in the compost bin and the remainder on the flower beds to supress the weeds.
